Big TV Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications (RCOM), will launch direct-to-home (DTH) services commercially by the end of this month.

It expects to offer DTH services to over 10 million subscribers across the country and feed to over 15 million households.

Big TV will offer set-top boxes (STBs) at Rs 1,000-Rs 1,500, along with a monthly subscription package of Rs 300, which will entitle them to watch the channels being aired; it will also provide subscribers Rs 100 worth pay-per view (PPV) movies. They will have access to 30 PPV channels showing Bollywood, Hollywood and regional films.

Sumit Chowdhury, CIO, Reliance Communications, said: “The DTH service will commercially launch before the end of March.”

He declined to give the number of channels and other details but sources said that Big TV will offer around 100 channels initially. Later, the company is expected to increase the number of channels to 300.

Industry sources said the launch is likely only in May 2008 as the hardware is not yet ready, and the company will prefer the launch after school vacation commences on May 2008 though it was not independently confirmed.

Meanwhile, Chowdhury said Wimax technology isn’t cost-effective at present due to spectrum shortage. Nationwide launch of Wimax services will depend on the availability of more spectrum, he said.

At present, the DTH market is dominated by two private players — Essel group’s Dish TV and TataSky, which is a joint venture between the Tatas and Rupert Murdoch’s Star Group.

Dish TV, the first DTH player in the country, has around 3 million subscribers, while TataSky has over 1.7 million. Apart from these, Bharti group and Sun TV will also launch DTH in by year-end. According to an estimate, the DTH reach in India is likely to expand from 2.5 million households now to 16 million by 2010. Unlike cable, DTH is a more organised and a less-regulated business. With heavyweights foraying into the space, the DTH segment is set to outpace digital cable in the near term and become a 14 million home market by fiscal 2010.

Q. What is DD DIRECT+ ?
A. DD DIRECT+ is India's first and only FTA Direct-To-Home (DTH) Service from Doordarshan.

Q. What is FTA DTH ?
A. Normally all over the world the DTH operator charges activation charges and monthly subscription charges depending upon the channels to be viewed. DD DIRECT+ is unique FTA-DTH (Free to Air DTH) in which the subscriber can buy the receiver from open market and start viewing the programmes without paying a penny.

Q. What is the composition of DD DIRECT+ bouquet ?
A. DD DIRECT+ bouquet is a fantastic combination of 19 Doordarshan channels, 14 Private TV channels and 12 Audio channels of All India Radio. The list of all available channels are given below:

A. Though the transmission was on for quite some time, the bouquet was formally inaugurated by our Honourable Prime Minister on 16/12/2004. At present the transmissionis 'ON' with 33 TV and 12 Radio channels.

Q. What is the reach of DD DIRECT+ ?
A. DD-DIRECT is available throughout the country except Andaman & Nicobar Islands and reaches even those places where cable is not available.

Q. What are the advantages of DD DIRECT+ over cable connection ?
A. DD DIRECT+ ensures excellent Picture Quality for all the channels in the bouquet. There is no intermediary and one gets the signals directly from the broadcasters. There are no recurring charges to be paid to anybody to view any of the programmes.

Q. Can DD DIRECT+ be viewed without disconnecting existing cable connection ?
A. Cable connection can be viewed in normal TV mode and DTH channels can be viewed in AV mode by choosing the AV option from the remote of your TV set. DTH channels can be changed using STB remote control.

Q. Once the Dish & Decoder are installed, will it be possible to receive all channels ?
A. Yes all the channels available in the bouquet can be received once the receive equipment is installed.

Q. If there are more than one TV set in one house; will all TV sets require separate STBs/Dishes to receive DD DIRECT+ ?
A. Yes, for each TV a separate STB will be required.

Q. How much is the power consumption of a receive system ?
A. It consumes approximately 40 Watts of electric power.

Q. If one changes his residence or moves to some other city, can he continue to use the same STB and the Dish to receive DD DIRECT+ ?
A. Yes, he can carry the equipment anywhere in India and continue to enjoy DD DIRECT+ after installing dish in the new location.

Q. Will the reception be affected by rains/snowfall ?
A. Though provision exists in the uplink system to take care of fading of the signal due to rains, yet heavy rains may result into outage for a few minutes in the DTH signal.

Q. Where can the Dish be installed ?
A. Dish can be installed on the roof-top or on the wall.

Q. In case one wants to receive paid service of some other DTH service provider, will the same receive segment work ?
A. If one possesses the STB as specified by BIS, one will be able to receive Free-to-Air as well as paid DTH service.

Q. Are any Audio (Radio) channels also available in DD DIRECT+ ?
A. Yes, there are 12 Radio channels available in the bouquet.

Q. Is Doordarshan marketing/selling/appointing dealers for the Receive Equipment?

A. NO. The equipment is available in the open market and can be had from any TV Dealer. Doordarshan has not authorized anybody to sell the Receive Equipment nor has given any dealership etc. for the purpose.

Q. Has Doordarshan authorized anybody to collect any money for Receive Equipment or as subscription fee etc?

A. It is clarified that no subscription fee is required to be paid to ANYBODY for receiving the DD DIRECT+ signal. The service is totally free and expenditure involved is only one time i.e. on the Receive Equipment, which is available in the open market and can be purchased and installed through the dealer of this type of equipment.

Q. Is Doordarshan appointing any dealer in future for marketing the platform/receive equipment/ subscribers/customers?

A. NO.

Q. What should be the cost of the Receive Equipment for DD DIRECT+?

A. The indicative price of a Receive System may be about less than Rs.3000 . It may however vary with the make of equipment and will also depend upon the local taxes/prevailing custom duty etc.

Q. Can the receive System be installed by the viewer himself?

A. Detailed procedure for installation is given in the website. However, it is advisable to take the help of skilled technical person for the installation of the system.

Q. What are the channels available on the DD DIRECT+ platform?

Q. Can the Receive Dish be fixed on the window grill?

A. It may be possible to get the dish fixed on the window grill with slight modification on the grill or the fixtures but it is desirable to fix the dish on rigid wall or roof top .

A. The signal can be received anywhere in India except in Andaman and Nicobar.

Q. Which are the dealers of the equipment in a particular city/town?

A. Yes, the DD DIRECT+ signal is made available to you through satellite and doesn’t require any tower or cable for its distribution.

A. In the STB the change in program (TV channel) is detected but the information of changed channel name is not stored automatically. The required change of information can be stored by deleting the earlier information and reinstalling (scanning) the new channel information..

Q. How to update the changes in TV channel name manually?

What is DTH

Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television is becoming a buzzword in the satellite broadcast industry due to the fact that DTH offers immense opportunities to both broadcasters and viewers. Thanks to the rapid development of digital technology, DTH broadcast operators worldwide have been able to introduce a large number of new interactive applications in the television market besides a large number of entertainment programmes over a single delivery platform. In addition, since digital technology permits a highly efficient exploitation of the frequency spectrum, the number of TV channels that can be broadcast using digital technology is significantly higher than with analogue technology. The increased number of television channels allows the operator to satisfy the demand of a number of niche markets with dedicated transmissions.

In general, DTH service is the one in which a large number of channels are digitally compressed, encrypted and beamed from very high power satellites. The programmes can be directly received at homes. This mode of reception facilitates the use of small receive dish antennas of 45 to 60 cm diameter installed at convenient location in individual buildings without needing elaborate foundation /space etc. Also, DTH transmission eliminates local cable operator completely, since an individual user is directly connected to the service providers. However, a digital receiver is needed to receive the multiplexed signals and view them on a TV. DTH, in sharp contrast to Cable TV, lends itself to easy monitoring and control.

Transmission in Ku band is most appropriate and widely used for the purpose. As mentioned above, all the encoded transmission signals are digital - thus providing higher resolution picture quality and better audio than traditional analog signals. All the advantages of the digital transmission, as applicable to the terrestrial transmission are relevant in the satellite transmission also.

On the Laguna Del Ray track, off on the right is a small
island just offshore. On top the island is a chest of cash.

Between gate 6 and 7 on the Black Gold track is a fenced-in
area that contains another box of cash. There is an oil truck
nearby it.

When starting on the Treasure Bay track, go over to the beached
tanker boat to the right, and drive around on the water side.
You can find a chest in the side hull, with $666.

On the Truck Stop 101 track, go to the "hidden" highway and
drive alongside the right side of the road. You will eventually
find a chest of cash.

Hints:
------
Nothing in the Evolution rulebook says you can't forcefully
"aid" a competitor off a bridge, over a cliff, or into
oncoming traffic. Do so as frequently as possible.

This is 4x4 racing, baby, and as such is generally
conducted on surfaces of loose gravel, sand, and dirt.
Drive accordingly; slowing much earlier for corners than
you would in a road racing game and taking turns from the
inside to allow plenty of run-off room.

Until such time as your bank account is absolutely bursting
at the seams and you can afford one of the outrageously
high-priced made for racing machines, don't sweat your choice
of vehicles. Parts upgrades are far more important.

Use the overhead map as a general guide only. Faster routes
are always available, though you shouldn't rely on the AI
drivers to find the best ones.

Edit Cash:
----------
First go into the game and play a bit to earn a little
extra cash, at least $10,000.00 or so.
Now sell your truck. Your should have somewhere
near $40,000.00.

Look in your directory for the following file:
C:\programs\Terminal Reality\4x4 Evolution\system\metal.ini

..open the (metal.ini) file using notepad listed in your
accessories folder in Windows. Now save the file in a
temporary folder or on your desktop. Go back into the game
and buy a vehicle and some of the parts you want.
When your cash is low, do the following:

Exit the game and go back into your temporary folder and
open the file named metal.ini and look for a line that says:
Cash=(followed by a series of numbers and letters)

I think the string is specific to the your player profile.
Select the line and copy it. (now this is important only
select the line that says Cash=(and the string of characters
following the equal sign) not the entire file).
Now open the metal.ini file in your:

C:\programs\Terminal Reality\4x4 Evolution\system\metal.ini

and look for a line that says:
Cash=(followed by a series of numbers and letters)

Select that line and paste over it the line you copied from
the previous file.

Now save the file and exit notepad. Go back into the game
and like magic you just padded your wallet again. If you
want more cash, like say enough to buy one of race trucks,
just sell your truck again and repeat all of the steps above.
Remember every time you save the current:

C:\programs\Terminal Reality\4x4 Evolution\system\metal.ini

...your increasing the amount of cash you have. You can just
keep doubling the amount of money you have by buying several
trucks, pasting a new line in and then selling the trucks you
bought. Saving that current file into your temporary folder and
then buy more trucks and parts and on and on and on until you
have the amount of cash you want.

If you would like to get instant cash without doing this trick,
try putting in: "re25ykP*g*bCbqRqz*zb1xPz1P+" behind the cash=
line to get $2.5 million. (omit the quotes)

the starting line, but stop immediately after it. Turn around and face the

rectangle.
On one section of pavement, there is a set of ramps.

Silverton Pass: Hidden money

Just before you reach checkpoint 7, stop in the water. Turn left and stay in
water. Keep to the
left at the fork. After this, there is a small rock jetty to your left. In
the small pool beside it is a
box of money with a little over $1400.

When starting, go over to the beached tanker boat to the right, and drive
around on the water
side. You can find another chest in the side hull, with $666.

Truck Stop 101: Hidden money

From the starting line, turn left off the track and drive straight until you
reach a highway. Turn
right, stay off the road about 40 yards, but just below the hill that runs
along the highway.
There should be a big dip next to the road within a few hundred yards. Down
in the lowest
part of the dip is a box with $907. If you are just flying down the side of
the road you will
miss the box.

Truck Stop 101: Drive over 200 mph

The Chevrolet Silverado (4WD) is a good truck to use in the game.

It will go to 140mph in 6 seconds.

The Dodge Dakota Club Cab (4WD) is a good truck to use in the game.

Use the Ford F-150 Race Truck equipped with sport fly wheel, turbo charger,
dyno
tune levels 1-4, forced induction exhaust and a high capacity fuel pump.

If you like to offroad, put in the "$1 million" code and get the Ford
Excursion. The F-250
has the same amount of power but the rear wheels spin a lot.

Use the Ford F-250 Supercab 4x4 with race fly wheel, race clutch, race gear
box ,race

and is an excellent jumper.

The mausoleum's resident ghost will fly out and dive onto the track,
leaving behind a slimy trail of ectoplasm. Most unpleasant to drive
through. Bats fly out of the tree when its roots are struck. Watch
out for this distraction.

Track Tips:

An unstable vortex on the track will try to suck cars into another
dimension if they get too close. By forcing your opponents into it,
you can put some serious distance between you and them. Just be careful
not to get stuck in the vortex yourself.

With jugs of moonshine and a still, wild animals crossing

his burrow to get a closer look at the radio controlled ruckus,

On this track is a moving tire swing, which will whack your
racer if it hits it. If you can force your opponent into the
path of the tire swing, they'll be knocked off course, allowing

Hitting him will cause cars to go spinning out of control.

Watch out for the dog house! Get too close to the dog's bone,
and he'll chew on your car until he feels his bone is safe.

Give Yourself The Edge

Power Ups can be disabled at any time for no-nonsense racing!

Turbo Boost

When a Turbo Boost power up is activated, your racer is given
a short burst of additional speed. Although this acceleration
is brief, in a close race it might be just enough to send you
over the finish line ahead of your opponents.

Bottle Rocket
-------------
Your racer launches a Bottle Rocket that "homes in" on the
lead racer. Racers hit by a Bottle Rocket become momentarily
uncontrollable. Because the Bottle Rocket cannot make sharp
turns, skillful drivers can sometimes elude them.

Electro Shock
-------------
When an Electro Shock power up is activated, your racer is
engulfed in an arching ball of electricity that strikes any
opponents that attempt to pass. Racers that are zapped by
this electricity slow down for a short period of time.

Firecracker
-----------
A firecracker is released behind your car with a three-second
fuse. A racer that hits the firecracker instantly triggers
an explosion as well. When it explodes, racers that are caught
in its blast radius are knocked over.

Ghost Drive
-----------
Your racer becomes "Ghosted" (transparent) and is no
longer affected by your opponent's power ups. Ghost
Drive also lets your racer drive through water hazards
such as ponds, lakes, rivers, or sprinklers without
slowing down.

Oil Slick

A pool of oil is released from the rear of your racer.
Racers that drive over an oil slick lose traction and

Aim your first shot at the middle cannon. Aim it so when you
hit into the cannon, the cannon is pointing straight. The

Aim your first shot at the rock. If you hit it perfectly,
a bee will fly over and drop your ball in the cup for a

sign reads '3'. Timing is VERY important. Also, if you don't time it
right, your ball will fall into the construction pit.

Next to the pool of water across from the pyramid with the hole there
is a bird. Putt the ball at the bird and it will pick it up and drop
it into the cup.

Light up all three lights at the top by going through the slots. The
bumpers will change colors and are worth more points.

When deploying a ball hit it soft so it only goes up to the third light on
the
far right side. You will get 75,000 points.

To earn points, start a game. When playing a game, send the ball through the
Hyperspace Chute to spin the flag. While it is spinning, start a new game.
That
flag will still spin and you will earn some points at the start of the new
game.

Enable the bmax code to keep getting balls when you lose them. You can get a
very
high score by doing this. If you do this and get a high enough score, keep
pressing
[Bump] so it says "TILT" and you will lose a ball. Note: You can also use
the 1max
code after you lose a ball to keep going. This way, you do not have to tilt
the board
when you want to quit.
if you restart a bad game when you are going through a wheel door at the
correctly
moment, you will get the points for it.
